“Blue Istria” boasts some of Croatia’s most attractive coastal towns, many with a distinctive Venetian influence and others with the remarkable traces of Austro-Hungarian heritage – Umag, Novigrad, Poreč, Vrsar, Rovinj, Pula, Medulin, Rabac,… Crystal-clear seas, pebble beaches, historic seaside towns where Unesco Heritage and Roman amphitheatre can be visited.

Magic Istria

Energy That Inspires

While visitors are attracted by hilltop towns loaded with art galleries and taking a stroll in villages unchanged for nearly a millennium, the locals are passioned in producing wine, olive oil, Istrian prosciutto, cheese, honey and products with lavender. By end of the day, all enjoy sunsets that are spectacular.

In a series of attractive titles that followed over the years, Istria was newly crowned by the title Best in Travel – Readers’ Choice Awards 2021 in the category Community Winner. The readers of Lonely Planet nominated Istria because of many rich experiences found inland, particularly homestays on farms and the laid-back local atmosphere of tiny hilltop villages. “The people living here are genuine and welcoming,” one reader told. “Istria offers authentic and unforgettable experiences… each of which gives back to the local communities,” explained another. Plus plenty of others fawning over the good wine, hearty food and a welcome lack of crowds.

Selected Amazing Istrian Experiences

Truffle Hunting

Sniffing for gold

Truffles have always had an extraordinary reputation starting with the Romans, who believed them to have aphrodisiac powers. These little weirdly looking  “potatoes” are considered an ultimate delicacy by foodies worldwide.  Istria is the only place in the world where both nobile white and black varieties can be found in big quantities.  Join a hedonistic experienced guide, enjoy the company of a sharp-nosed hunting dog, and roam the valley in search of the infamous – and highly valuable – white truffle. And then – from earth to dining table – taste freshly foraged truffles drizzled over homemade tagliatelle, fish or steak.

First Istrian White Truffle Auction, hosted by Istria Tourist Board was held in November 2019 at Mayfair’s private members club Harry’s Bar attended by 60 UHNWI. All lots were auctioned by Lord Harry Dalmeny, Chairman of Sotheby’s.

EVOO Passion

The Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil Region In The World

Hailed by epicurean explorers as the ‘new Tuscany’, Istria is famed for its fresh Adriatic seafood and favourable Mediterranean climate. People appreciate and understand the local ingredients, delight in their home-cooked delicacies and proudly protect family recipes, passed down through generations.

Dating back through centuries, and perhaps the most highly valued Istrian ingredient, is the extra virgin olive oil (EVOO); rich, peppery and on par with that produced in Tuscany. Sommelier classes, creative cookery masterclasses and EV olive oil tasting programmes can be arranged within many prized estate.

For the sixth year in a row (2015-2020), Istria has won the title of the best quality olive region in the world, as selected by experts of the Flos Olei – considered to be the “bible guide” of extra virgin olive oil.

Wine Aficionado

The triangular shape of the Istrian peninsula looks rather like a bunch of grapes – and given the strong vinicultural heritage of the region – some say this is no coincidence.

Whilst exploring local wineries, budding connoisseurs are invited to taste Teran, the region’s most popular indigenous red wine, typically deep ruby in colour. Fruity, fresh and fragrant, Malvazija dates back to Ancient Greece, and it is the most popular as well as the most awarded Istrian wine.

Istrian wines have been winning top awards at prestigious competitions for years now, and are particularly successful at Decanter, the largest global wine competition. In 2019, Istrian wines won 6 gold medals.

Yachting

Nautical Paradise

Respected Blue Flags, symbol of preserved, safe and pleasant environment, are a regular ornament in most of Istrian marinas on the Adriatic Sea.

Among 11 marinas for yachting and boating enthusiasts, the Top 3 are Marina Nautica in Novigrad, Marina Veruda in Pula and the newbuild ACI Marina Rovinj.

Sail with us along Istria’s azure coast, plunging into picturesque Mediterranean motifs – nine lighthouses, coves and beaches, small boats floating peacefully, awaiting in the beauty of solitude. Along the coast, fishermen are repairing their nets. They will be glad to tell you tales of the sea, accompanied by tasty pilchard and a glass of Istrian Malvasia.
